Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka

The following is a gallery of ruins in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka. Today this impressive locale is noted as a UNESCO Heritage Site and also one of the oldest inhabited areas on earth. King Pandukabhaya was said to have made some of the earliest layout plans including, suburbs, temples, chapels, reservoirs, markets and even cemeteries and execution centers.

Ruwanwelisaya: the all white stupa is very impressive, it stands 300 feet tall and has an extensive court year area. When I visited it was virtually empty besides the family pictured in all white.

Jetavanaramaya is a stupa, located in the ruins of Jetavana Monastery. This is the stupa with the copper like tone. At the time of its construction it was the third highest structure in the ancient world behind the pyramids of Egypt.

Anuradhapura is a hidden gem. The windy, bumpy, red dirt paths are easily traveled by bike. I was in awe of the size and scope of the ruins from the little that I photographed. Since there is such a lack of tourist activity, it was alot easier to picture life as it was 4,000 years ago in this hidden tropical forrest. Overall a great variety of dagobas, monastic buildings, and pokunas make this an excellent site to explore.
