When Christopher Columbus landed in Puerto Rico in 1493, he did not stick around to investigate the island. He spent two days in total…claiming the island for Spain and then christening it San Juan Bautista (Saint John the Baptist). (continued after gallery)

Hey Kurt- Did you go from Okinawa to San Juan? That’s quite a change in culture and geography in a short time span. I liked the bit about the security presence there. I have heard from some that in Mexico the police are fairly prevalent, but are essentially predators as well, robbing the civilians at will. Wonder how San Juan compares…
Puerto Rico is comparably alot safer I’d say than Mexico. Old San Juan is very safe because of the high tourist presence. Beautiful island to visit.
beautiful pictures! Mexico is safe too! Everywhere there is danger.
I was born there and haven’t been there since I was ten. I’m 47 now, but I don’t know if I will ever be back there. I’m one of those people that don’t step foot back in places that I suffered before. I had very bad memories from there as a child. It took away the joy of wanting to ever visit there again.
